Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS)

The Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale (RCADS) is a widely-used self-report questionnaire designed to assess anxiety and depression symptoms in children and adolescents aged 8-18 years. Developed by Drs. Bruce Chorpita, Susan Yim, Jennifer Moffitt, Mary Jane Umemoto, and Tracy Francis, the RCADS corresponds to DSM-IV anxiety disorders and major depressive disorder.

This assessment measures six subscales:
  • Separation Anxiety Disorder (SAD): Fear or anxiety about separation from attachment figures
  • Social Phobia (SP): Fear of social situations and negative evaluation by others
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD): Excessive worry about various events and activities
  • Panic Disorder (PD): Recurrent unexpected panic attacks and related concerns
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Intrusive thoughts and repetitive behaviors
  • Major Depressive Disorder (MDD): Persistent sadness and loss of interest in activities

The assessment also provides a Total Anxiety Score (combining all anxiety subscales) and a Total Internalizing Score (all subscales including depression).

The RCADS contains 47 items and takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete.
